So, you want to start a blog? This is the perfect place to be.
Let’s get you started!
1. What will you be blogging about?
The first thing to figure out is what type of blog you want to have. In other words, your ‘niche’. The more focused you are on your niche and the type of posts you’ll create to fit that niche, the more new followers you’ll gain. If you create a new blog and the content is all over the place, people won’t be able to connect with it as much as if it focused on a particular category.
Popular blogging categories or niches include:
DIY + Craft
Parenting + Family
Food + Drink
Art + Design
Books + Film
As you can see, there are so many different types of blogs out there. You need to go with a niche that sounds inspiring to you, one you’d love to create content for. If you want more than one niche, (e.g. a fashion, beauty and lifestyle blog) I suggest choosing no more than three categories.
2. Choose a name
Next you need to come up with a unique name for your blog. You can either use your full name, or you can come up with a different creative name. For more help choosing a name, jump over here.
3. Purchase the domain name (www.yourblog.com)
Once you have a name, I recommend purchasing the domain name straight away (although it’s not entirely necessary if you’re starting a blog on Blogger). This will ‘reserve’ your new blog name and will discourage other people from using the name. If they can’t have the domain for it, they’re unlikely to use it.
My favourite place to buy domains is GoDaddy. You can search for your domain name, check if it’s taken and purchase it if it’s not!
4. Grab the username
Next I recommend grabbing the same name on all social media accounts. For example, if your blog is called Sprinkle Cupcake, you need to try and get the username sprinklecupcake on every social media account (eg. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram). If you can’t have the name exactly, try adding an underscore (_) or a dash (-) in the middle of the words, or adding the word ‘blog’ at the end.
5. Choose your platform
There are two platforms I recommend for blogging. The first is Blogger, the second is WordPress.org. If you don’t have much money to spend, here’s how to start a blog with Blogger. If you’re happy to spend a bit on your blog, try starting one with WordPress.
6. Install a theme
Both Blogger and WordPress have free themes available to use. However, buying a designer theme is a much better option! It’s easy to install one to your blog and the whole design will be changed in an instant. Check out my best themes for Blogger and WordPress.
